Estimating a Pdf of Parameters of Oxide Inclusions on Fatigue Fracture Surface of Standardized Specimen

چکیده
Original scientific paper Studies show that, if present, inhomogenities should not be neglected when predicting the fatigue life of cast parts. Accounting for their presence presents a problem due to random nature of their location, distribution and size. Knowledge of statistical characteristics of inhomogenities is fundamental for describing their effect on fatigue life. This paper presents a statistical analysis of oxide inclusions which caused fatigue failure of AlSi9Cu3 specimens. Geometrical characteristics were described using geometry parameters A and L. Three different mixed PDFs were used for modelling the distribution of the selected geometry parameters and multivariate Gaussian function was found to be the most appropriate. For estimating unknown parameters of the mixture, modified EM algorithm and REBMIX were used and compared. Results identified modified EM algorithm as more suitable. Bootstrap analysis was carried out for the chosen joint PDF and algorithm, for assigning a measure of variation of the estimated PDF’s parameters.

Estimation of Maximum Inclusion Size and Fatigue Limit in HSLA-100 Steel
The objective of the current study is to determine the fatigue limit of a clean and high-performance material named as HSLA-100 steel and to compare the obtained fatigue limit with that of theoretically predicted fatigue limit by statistics of extreme value (SEV) method. Also, the size of inclusions located at the site of fatigue crack nucleation on the fracture surface of the fatigue test spec...

The heat-resistant steel after aluminized was treated by laser shock processing (LSP) with high power Nd:YAG laser, and then was tensile tested at 400 . The effects of the high °C -temperature behavior after LSP were analyzed from residual stress and fracture organization. The results showed that the yield strength and tensile strength of heat-resistant steel after aluminized were improved obvi...
متن کاملA new brittleness index for estimation of rock fracture toughness
Assessment of the correlation between rock brittleness and rock fracture toughness has been the subject of extensive research works in the recent years. Unfortunately, the brittleness measurement methods have not yet been standardized, and rock fracture toughness cannot be estimated satisfactorily by the proposed indices. In the present study, statistical analyses are performed on some data col...
متن کاملBending Fatigue Failures in Valve Steel
In the present paper the effect of defects (viz. pits, gouges and oxide inclusions) will be reported. Although certain defects were uniformly distributed over the specimen surface, the majority of all fractures started in the edge region. An explanation to this behaviour is presented in terms of stress enhancement in the edge regions due to edge deflections.
متن کاملInitiation and Display of Delamination Failure During Fatigue of Graphite Fiber-Epoxy Composites
Laminar microdiscontinuities which lead to the delamination of two unidirectional layup graphite fiber-epoxy composite materials during fatigue have been characterized, and discontinuity geometry and type related to the fatigue lifetime of specimens in which they occur. Two types of discontinuities were commonly observed: voids and organic inclusions consisting of regions of excess hardener. A ...
